Background
Have you ever seen an inspiring tattoo picture on social media and wished it was easier to collect the works of various artists?
One day, a friend showed me some ankle tattoo design pictures she was considering, and I helped her pick one that suited her style. But when she closed the photo app and switched back to Instagram to find the artists’ profile, I realized there could be a smoother process.
This experience motivated me to embark on this UX case study, aiming to make the discovery and connection process between tattoo enthusiasts and artists more streamlined and effective.
Problems
Existing tattoo apps face low user engagement primarily because of a lack of registered tattoo artists.
Many tattoo-related apps exist, yet awareness of their existence is surprisingly low. This lack of awareness was the starting point of my curiosity.
Initially, I planned to focus solely on the needs of tattoo enthusiasts. However, as I conducted more research, I realized that the success of a tattoo app depends not only on engaging tattoo enthusiasts but also on attracting active participation from tattoo artists.
This realization prompted the creation of two personas and corresponding How Might We statements. Detailed research findings are outlined in the research section below.
How Might We enhance the user experience around finding and booking tattoos?
How Might We make it easier for new tattoo artists to promote their work and connect with potential customers?
Solutions
Assist new artists in promoting their work to boost artist participation and help customers find affordable and reputable tattoo artists.
Additionally, tattoo enthusiasts can save their favourite tattoo artists and works, and simplify the booking process for appointments.

Competitive Analysis
Few registered artists on competitor app
I was wondering why customers still book through social media despite a tattoo app that has been around for over a decade. So I started with competitive analysis first.
Tattoodo is a tattoo app and website that features tattoo artists and their works. It was founded in Denmark in 2013, and is now based in New York City.
- Tattoodo has only a few registered tattoo artists.
- Many people don’t even know this app exists.
- Tattoodo lacks a feature to easily discover new or popular tattoo artists.
- Tattoodo is primarily used for making tattoo reservations, rather than providing extensive information about tattoo artists.
User Interviews
New tattoo artists are desperate to make a name for themselves while many customers look for a reasonable price tattoo.
Following the competitor analysis, I wanted to seek to gather feedback from tattoo artists on their current methods of self-promotion through personal social media. Additionally, I also wanted to seek input from customers on their experiences with the existing booking process.
Questions Asked to Six Tattoo Enthusiasts
- Could you describe your experiences with getting a tattoo?
- What are the three things you consider the most when you get a tattoo and why?
- What challenges did you face in the process of getting a tattoo? How did this make you feel?
- Is there any way you think it could make the process of getting a tattoo better?
Questions Asked to Three Tattoo Artists
- Can you describe your process for working with a client to design and execute a tattoo?
- How do you manage your portfolio and market yourself as a tattoo artist?
- What are the challenges while working as a tattooist?
- What are some common misconceptions that people have about the tattooing process, and how do you address them with you clienets?
Affinity Map
The affinity map helped me narrow personas to customers and new artists.
I gathered insights into their experiences with the tattoo reservation and promotion process. By collecting their feedback and analyzing common patterns, I created an Affinity Map to gain a deeper understanding of user needs and pain points.
As if -> To be
The feature for new tattooists to be known, the feature to offer benefits to customers.
As a result of data analysis, tattooists who needed a tattoo app were new tattooists. I came up with the idea for app feature for both tattoo enthusiasts and new tattooists by giving new tattooists a chance to make themselves known and giving tattoo enthusiasts a chance to see a variety of fresh works and price benefits.
User Flow
I set the major flows: Onboarding, Customers Booking Flow, and New Tattooists Managing Page Flow
???? Creating a user flow including modal, and system action, I think it will help mutual understanding between team members, such as communication with developers.
Testing + Improvements
Major improvements through a 2-week test with a total of 5 users.
I iterated usability tests to discover points of friction and unintuitive interactions. Here are the process of usability testing.
- Introduction of application and background.
- After a specific task description, request the task to be completed.
(e.g. Find an Old school specialty tattooists within 100m of where you are and book an appointment for tomorrow at 2 pm.) - Allow users to complete tasks on their own, and record their actions.
- Interview them about the challenges they have experienced.
